Our focus in Science right now is to use tools to examine major parts of a plant structure.  I asked children to bring in plants from home so we could examine them using a hand lens.  Thanks to the amazing parents, they had plenty of plants to explore.  They also had to think like a scientist and record their findings.  They worked so hard!

Our comprehension skill this week is sequence of a story.  The children broke off into groups of 3 to sort and sequence story cards from our first three stories.  They did a wonderful job working together.  I loved that they used their books as a resource and encouraged each other to go back to the text!  I am one happy teacher! :)

Open House

Hello wonderful families!  I just wanted to remind you that our Title One Open House will be tomorrow starting at 6:00.  I hope to see you all there.  We will have a brief meeting in the multipurpose room and will then move to the classrooms.  I will share a brief overview of what to expect during your child's first grade experience.

The Crayon Box That Talked by: Shane DeRolf

I often use children's literature to teach both academic and social skills.  Today our focus was on our talents and how when we all work together, we can create something truly unique.  We read the wonderful book by Shane DeRolf titled, The Crayon Box that Talked.  Then, the children broke on into teams to create a "masterpiece".  I was impressed by the ideas and how well they worked together.  Here are a few highlights from the day. Enjoy! :)

Hopes and Dreams

Each year we have the students begin with developing their Hopes and Dreams.  This is a Responsive Classroom approach that helps them understand that making and reaching goals is one way to achieve success.  This year I  asked the children to create a super hero to go along with their writing piece.  I think they turned out great!  We are ready to work hard to reach our dreams!

Making New Friends

We had a fun day reviewing our letters and sounds along with getting to know new friends!  The students used glow bracelets to cut out the letters of their name.  Then using the bracelets,

they made Venn Diagrams to compare and contrast the letters of their names.  I loved seeing the smiles as they worked their way around the room getting to know their new classmates!  Too cute!
